Auricular Acupuncture

Auricular Acupuncture

Is a technique of using Acupoints on the surface of the ear to treat pain and medical conditions within the body. It is used by practitioners all over the world to treat pain, addictions and internal disorders with excellent results. Either in conjunction with another treatment or by itself, it is often effective when other treatments have failed.

Auricular Acupuncture has its roots in Traditional Chinese Medicine. Just as this ancient healing art discovered acupuncture points on the body for treatment of various conditions, similar points are found on the ear, and this therapy is known as a Microsystem, it is believed that is works through the central nervous system rather than through the Chinese meridians

Historical Background

In the 1950s, Dr Paul Nogier of Lyon, France expanded the original Chinese charts into a more comprehensive system. The ancient texts showed only a few points for specific conditions. His work demonstrated the ear is actually a micromap of the entire body, with the whole of the body represented and treated through the ear.  Auricular acupuncture has moved on since then and has been further developed and modernised all over the world

Paul Robin is the Head of TCM at the College of Chinese Medicine London and has over 30 years experience as a teacher and practitioner of Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine, he is the author of this App and trained with a Chinese Master TCM Physician Dr. Ac. Bernard Kai Lam Lee for 9 years and was also his apprentice and became a co practitioner and teacher at his School: The Fook Sang College.

Auricular Acupuncture is used widely in many countries around the world for pain control, addictions of all kinds, internal disorders, emotional issues, and a host of other problems. Medical doctors, chiropractors, acupuncturists, naturopaths, dentists, and laypeople alike routinely see excellent results from properly applied auricular treatments.

These choices of auricular points are based on research from a variety of sources and Paul’s own clinical experience.

Some slight point location discrepancies may be due to various systems developed by different practitioners over the years, as all ears are slightly different, locations shown are approximate and should be verified by palpation or electronic testing.

The exact location of auricular points may move slightly from day to day in the same client due to slight changes of sensitivity within the Cranial Nervous System.

The most effective points are the Reactive Points, either located by palpation or by electrical resistance testing. These are Points of lowered electrical resistance which are small reflex areas that connect to other parts of the body.

Systemic points are used bilaterally,  and musculoskeletal points unilaterally if the condition affects one side. clients sometimes can be disoriented if one ear is needled using systemic points except where the organ is on one side like spleen, stomach, pancreas, liver and gallbladder

Contraindications

Pregnancy

If the client hasn’t eaten that day

Diabetics or other chronically ill clients who have not taken medication

Treatment must be administered whilst the client lying down as is an otherwise greater risk of fainting

Don’t treat people who are drunk, stoned or intoxicated even from the night before

Always keep client details and treatment records

Side effects

If the client sitting is a risk of fainting

If the client feels strange or disorientated after needles: Insert Point Adrenal on the tip of the Tragus, which will usually make the client feel ok, also place them lying on their back with the feet elevated. There is a risk of miscarriage for pregnant clients.  A client who is heavily intoxicated should not be treated. Practitioners should take a basic first aid at work to be prepared for any eventuality.

If you follow the above guidelines, it’s unlikely that anything bad will happen or which cannot be dealt with by inserting the adrenal point.  You must remain with your client at all times whilst they are having treatment. Use only pre-sterilised needles and use tweezers or gloves when withdrawing and place used needles in a sharps bin, always wipe the ears with baby wipes before starting treatment.

Auricular points can also be stimulated with small magnets,  seeds or studs

Auricular Acupuncture though relatively safe and most often beneficial is NOT a substitute for qualified medical treatment, and should only be undertaken by a qualified auricular practitioner.

This app is designed to be simple, user friendly and to bring the benefits of this amazing therapy to a wide variety of health practitioners and students around the world.
